Switzerland, Slovakia and Bulgaria grab victories – 2012 CEV Women’s Junior Volleyball Championship
The 2nd day of the 2012 CEV Women’s Volleyball Championship brought a lot of luck for the Swiss, Slovak, and Bulgarian teams as they claimed success in their respective matches.
Switzerland defeated arch rival Dutch team, while host Slovakia stamped straight set win over Azerbaijan. Bulgaria also demonstrated a wonderful feat and edged out Austria. Slovakia scored second consecutive win, while Switzerland and Bulgaria pulled off
success after suffering the loss in their previous matches.
The City Sports Hall in BARDEJOV, Slovakia provided the backdrop for Pool D matches and good number of volleyball fans came to watch the live action of volleyball.
In the first match of the day, Swiss ladies posted 3-2 (24-26, 25-15, 25-18, 31-33, 15-12) victory over the Netherlands. It was an incredibly close competition, where both teams played to their full potential. Swiss Elena STEINEMANN emerged as the top scorer
of the match with the highest 33 points. Her teammate Martina HALTER came hard on the opponents and added 19 points.
On the Dutch side, Lynn BLENCKERS contributed team-high 16 points. A total of three Dutch players went into double-digit scores but Swiss team proved to be better and seized victory. The intense volleyball scrimmage between Switzerland and the Netherlands
continued for more than two hours.
In the second match of the day, the host Slovakian squad sent Azerbaijan to 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-21) loss. Home team had the stupendous support of local fans, which also served as the competitive edge in the match.
Slovakia’s Miroslava Rehakova and Andrea Strbova contributed 15 points apiece, while Azerbaijani team was supported by Yuliya Pshanichnykh, who settled for 11 points in the match.
“We are happy that we won again in straight sets. All teams in this group are strong, so six points from two games are very important. Azerbaijan changed its style of play compared to the first match as they started with two setters, but we adjusted to the
situation and I told my girls to play their own game. We are now preparing for the next opponent, Bulgaria,” commented the head coach of team Slovakia Eva Kosekova after the match.
In the last match of the second day, Bulgaria defeated Austria in a four sets. The set scores were 25-18, 25-19, 20-25 and 25-21. Austrian team performed well in last match against Azerbaijan but failed to display the same effort against Bulgaria on day-2
and suffered the damage.
The winning head coach of team Bulgaria, Radoslav Bakardzhiev, stated, “It was a nervous match. The first two sets were easy for us, but after that probably our girls thought that they had already claimed the game. The Austrian girls got their heads up and
caused us troubles. We made easy mistakes. I am happy that we finally closed it out in the fourth set.”
