Switzerland U-21 versus Spain U-21 – Under 21 European Championships: Second half review (Part 1)
The second half started with the score line at one nil with Spain in the lead thanks to a late first half goal by Ander via a cross by Didac Villa. Switzerland were immediately on the front foot in the second half as they looked
to make amends for a lacklustre first half performance. Spain made it difficult for Switzerland to get into their final third of the field as the miniature versions of La Furia Roja pressed up field like their senior team counter parts and denied Switzerland
any space in central midfield.
On the wings, Ander doubled up on the mercurial http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Xherdan-Shaqiri-c37074 with some help from Martin Montoya as Switzerland’s main creative influence was nullified. In the 51st minute, Emeghara had a brilliant chance to pull his
team back on level terms against Spain in the final of the U-21 European Championships. This time the Swiss striker was in a one-on-one situation with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-de-Gea-c10463 but the young target-man was unable to sneak the ball past the tall Atletico Madrid shot stopper
who held onto Emeghara’s effort with ease.
Emeghara’s wasted chance appeared to be the striker’s last contribution to the match as he was substituted soon after in the 53rd minute when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Switzerland-c3016 decided to take off the prolific goal-scorer and replace him with
the more work-man like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabian-Frei-c13103 was taken off the field. Pierluigi Tami brought about these changes as
Frei was completely anonymous in the first half of the match and failed to make an impact in the opening minutes of the second half as well.
In the 57th minute, Spain were let down by the referee as they were denied a clear cut penalty. Martin Montoya sneaked into the Swiss penalty area but the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 full back was taken down by Berardi. The referee failed
to spot the infringement as he ushered play onwards. It was a key moment in the match as the Spanish players protested with the referee but in the end their appeals were not taken into consideration as the score line remained at one nil to the Spanish U-21
team.
In the 62nd minute, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468 skied his shot from just outside the Swiss penalty area. The play opened up wonderfully for the young midfielder but
his final finish lacked accuracy as well as the finesse which was required to beat http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Yann-Sommer-c37199.
