Behind Japan, Switzerland is the country with the most kilometres done by railways (per person) in the world!

But still, private cars are more used. There are more than 500 cars per 1000 inhabitants in Switzerland which is a very high level, also due to a small amount of under-aged persons.

There are public buses as well - and practically any village (some are REALLY small, like 200 inhabitants) can be reached either by train or by bus. And there are even public ships on the lakes which can be used at the same price as the trains serving the same route.

The main cities all have really good public transportation. That means buses, trams, boats even. To go between cities the easiest is the train. You can drive of course because there's the autoroute. The train rides are really nice though. You see a lot of scenery and can just relax and stare out the window. The trains are all comfortable even though some are older than others. I would not buy a first class ticket because it's really not worth it. The comfort level is great in 2nd class. Honestly, I don't know anyone who rides in 1st.

Depending on how long you are going to Switzerland for there are several different train passes that you can get which could save you money. I would check out the train site, or you can go into the train travel agency when you get there. The people are really nice, very helpful, and informed.

Walking is a very popular way of getting around as well. The cities are compact and I really enjoy walking instead of taking the transportation if the weather is nice.

I wouldn't recommend taking taxis as they are quite expensive, but if you must, you must.
