Question:

Swollen feet/ankles after running?

I've started running to lose weight and increase stamina. I've never been a runner (even when I was in very good shape, I always favored my knees), so this is a whole new experience for me. After running for about 15 minutes last night, my feet and ankles were swollen and a little red. After a good soak in the bath and a little bit of walking/stretching, most of the swelling went away.

Is this normal when starting out? Will it subside once my body becomes accustomed to running? Could it be caused by crappy shoes?

  1. Congratulations on becoming a runner!  Having ice baths for your feet is the best thing after a run if your feet are swollen.  This will keep the swelling/inflammation down.  Take advil if you need to.  Start off easy, get yourself a good pair of shoes at a running store where there is knowledgeable staff to help you with not only your shoes but other running related questions...chances are they are runners too.  Join a learn to run 5K clinic online or your local running store may have a clinic or a running club.  It is normal for your body to scream a bit, it takes time for your body to get used to using those muscles.  Be patient.  You will get there.
