Swollen leg, red, from knee to toe, could it be broke?

My friend fell at work, caught his leg between 2 bars on a truck a couple of weeks ago. It has a soft pocket about as big as a tangerine in the back below the knee just above the calf muscle.

The whole leg from below the knee down is red,swollen, warm and he says he can't feel anything when I touch the soft pocket... He won't take the time off to go to the doctor! but I think he will have to. any idea just to calm me until I can get him to go?

He needs to see a doctor asap..I would even go to the ER with this one.. what you are describing is signs and symptoms of a blood clot..

could be  but you said he has put weight on it .. sounds like a very bad bruise of the bone

He needs to go to the dr right away or to the emergency room. it sounds as if he has at least a tremendous amount of soft tissue damage which if left untreated can sometimes lead to the tissue dying, which means AMPUTATION. Of course, this is a worse case scenario but, frankly is a real possibility. Also he is in danger of clot formation which is extremely dangerous if the clot gets in the blood stream and travels to the heart, lungs or brain any of which could kill him. He is being foolish in not seeking treatment.

My ex had the same type of injury just did it in a different way, he ended up waiting about 2 or 3 weeks before going into the doctor and that was a mistake. He didn't have any idea even that he had got a scratch or poke but even the smallest cut can cause Staff. His injury turned out to be a Staff infection and he almost lost his leg. The redness and warmth is infection, also the swelling with the numbness is telling you that it is getting severe. They will have to drain his leg of all the infected fluid that is causing the swelling and will probably either put him on antibiotics or do a IV if it is already that severe. I suggest going into the Emergency room very soon so he can start to get it taken care of before it is too late. Good luck and I hope he is ok.

i'm no doctor but i'm going to answer anyways.

the pocket could be fluid build up from infection.

it also sounds like a break.

but you could also call the doctor and ask him questions, though i'd advise taking him to the emergancy room ASAP, you'll have to wait some time, but it'd be all done and over with then and there.  and you can go anytime of day.

Oh trust me, he should know if he broke his leg. But it sounds like internal bleeding.

There are a couple of things this could be, and all of them need to be taken care of like....now.

The most dangerous possibility is a blood clot, just waiting to break off and travel to his lungs, causing instant death.

wow!! he needs to see a doctor , this is really dangerous bcuz he could also be bleeding internally (that soft pocket) and he could have a blood clot forming. If he feels nothing at all nerves could be oinched or he broke something big time especially since there is swelling!

Drop him off at the ER  or call an ambulance and say u r concerned for his safety.

Can the dude walk at all? I bet he dosn't want to go bcuz he is scared or he can't pay for it (it would be expensive to i think). Plz help this person get to a ER

It definitely sounds broken at if he waits to much longer it could be amputated. You need to get your friend to the hospital immediately!  It sounds exactly like my friends leg looked when she fell and hurt herself. I hope I helped!

Yes, you should get him to see a doctor. You need to tell them that a doctor's daughter says that she experienced it first hand and it WILL get worse. I have went from having a sprained ankle to having to have surgery cuz i didn't want to go to take the time to let it heal. I know this probably didn't calm you down but, its the truth.

Possibly could be broke.  The symptoms you describe sound like a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).  This is a blood clot.  He really needs to go to the ER ASAP!!!  An x-ray will tell if its broke and an ultrasound would see if there is a blood clot.  A blood clot could cause a heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism or death.  I wouldn't calm down though.  I would nag until he can't take it anymore.  Sorry but this needs to be taken care of.
