How does a certified teacher with a type 04 certificate to teach elementary become eligible to teach high school and obtain a type 09 certificate?

I am looking at programs to obtain my masters and it seems there are more grants to become an elementary teacher than a high school history teacher. I'm wondering if after I obtain an type 04 certificate, how can I go about switching from elementary to high school in the future?

Note: This question pertains to teaching in Illinois, particularly in Chicago

  1. Chicago has their own set of rules, thanks to the Illinois General Assembly.

You will need a certificate for high school teaching.  Contact a college where you can obtain certification and ask what coursework you will need.  Generally, high school teaching requires a major in a teachng area, for example, history, science (biology, physics, chemistry), math, etc., and whatever education courses you need to be certified for the particular level you want to teach on.  There's usually some other "specialized" like general special ed courses (general knowledge of special ed, what it does, etc.), general minority courses (where you explore various minority groups), psychology (child, adolescent, and so on), (maybe) sociology (I'm not sure about this particular course of study).  Your college's department of education should know the requirements for certification.

    Good luck with your search.
