Sycerika McMahon and Chris Raven excel in swimming events: Day two – 2011 Commonwealth Games
Sycerika McMahon of Northern Ireland and Chris Raven of Australia
excelled their performances in the finals of Women’s 50m breast-stroke and Men’s 100m butterfly respectively, on the second day of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games on September 10, in Isle of Man.
McMahon presented her dominating efforts in the single-lap breast-stroke swim and obtained the gold medal of the event, by submitting a time of 31.47 seconds. This was McMahon’s second medal of the evening, as the Irish swimmer already captured the silver
medal of 200m Individual Medley (IM).
She was trailed by Sara Lougher of Wales, who remained only 0.65 seconds away from the champion and settled on the podium for silver medal with a timing of 32.12 seconds. Kelly Gunnell of South Africa earned third fastest spot of the swim, as she posted
a time of 32.20 seconds for bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Natasha Lloyd of New Zealand secured fourth best spot of the event, by finishing her swim in a time of 32.26 seconds. Erika Kong of Malaysia was the fifth position holder of the event, as she ended fifth with a timing of 32.68 seconds. Kong remained
0.19 seconds faster than her subsequent swimmer, Karlene Pircher of Australia, who was the sixth position holder of the event with a timing of 32.87 seconds.
Moments later, Raven acquired the gold medal of butterfly event by posting a time of 53.09 seconds. Raven remained 0.23 seconds ahead of his following swimmer, Hendrick Alberts of South Africa, as he clocked a time of 53.32 seconds for the silver medal.
The podium was completed by Alexander Hancock of New Zealand, who remained just 0.22 seconds behind his former finisher and produced a time of 53.54 seconds for bronze medal.
The squad of medal winners was followed by Daniel Woods of Wales, who stayed only 1.56 seconds behind Hancock and completed his race with a timing of 55.10 seconds. Woods was chased by Jian han Tern of Malaysia, who was 0.94 seconds behind his preceding
swimmer and reported a time of 56.04 seconds for fifth position. Similarly, Tern edged out her closest competitor and team-member, Chia Khian Chi, who ended her race in a sixth fastest time of 56.07 seconds.
In addition, McMahon and Raven were delighted with their crown winning efforts in the championships, while the crowd also admired the exhausting efforts of all podium finishers in their exclusive events. Furthermore, the winners were called upon the medal
rostrum for their outstanding swims after the session’s conclusion.
