Sycerika McMahon earns Women’s 400m IM gold: Day three – 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games
Sycerika McMahon of Northern Ireland earned the gold medal of the Women’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) on the last day of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games, which concluded on September 11, in Isle of Man.
The 16-year-old McMahon demonstrated her invincible efforts in the eight-lap IM event by submitting a top ranked time of 4 minutes and 42.43 seconds. McMahon confirmed her spot in the final round by occupying the top qualification spot in the preliminary
session. Nevertheless, she sustained her fastest qualification spot in the final round for the gold medal.
She was followed by Elena Sheridan of England, who remained nearly two seconds slower than her and reached the podium for the silver medal, by reporting in a time of 4 minutes and 44.27 seconds. In the meantime, Fiona Donnelly and Emily Jones of Scotland
ended their swims in a same time for the third position of the event. Donnelly and Jones failed to defeat each other on the finishing wall and concluded their swims with an identical time of 4 minutes and 45.68 seconds.
Then, Charlotte Atkinson of Isle of Man earned the fifth fastest spot of the event, as she stayed nearly seven seconds behind the pair of bronze medallists and clocked a time of 4 minutes and 52.20 seconds.
She was trailed by Ellena Jones of Wales, who remained only 0.10 seconds slower than her former finisher and concluded her sprint in a time of 4 minutes and 52.30 seconds for sixth position. The seventh spot of the race was obtained by Michelle Weber of
South Africa, who remained just 0.42 seconds slower than Jones on the finishing wall and posted a time of 4 minutes and 52.72 seconds. The final position of the event was secured by Kate Godrey of New Zealand, who ended her swim to produce a time of 4 minutes
and 52.78 seconds.
The arena went wild with the astonishing swims of all participants, while the winners received medals and accolades for their splendid efforts after the session.
