A question for the Sydneysiders here, I am living in Melbourne but may move to Sydney soon for a better job. What do you think of Sydney's public transport system, especially the train network? Is public transport in Sydney prompt, timely, efficient or affordable?

  1. CityRail sucks. Trains so overcrowded they need "pushers", trains always late, trains dirty, trains have no aircon, trains are dangerous at night and the station people are rude.

  2. I'm a Sydney student. Although I'm not one of those who commute, I'm disgusted at the services when I use it to go out on the weekends. They're delayed and the carriages are crowded and dirty.

  3. Sydney Rail train system is terrible. The trains are always late and the carriages are over crowded. Sydney Rail is always in the news because of there problems.

Below is the latest story about Sydney Rail.

  4. i take public transport daily and i find it quite reliable buses are usually on time as well as trains the only problem is that they need to be updated they haven't made any new train lines in about 150 years and they are planing on building a western line but it my take forever. Also when there is track work they are buses that are provided that go the same rout as the train

they only thing that it bad is how clean they are i do sit on the seats but some are worse than others

    here are stats

    Average duration of delays  19/5 - 23/5

      On-time 95.3%

      6 min to 10 min 59 sec late 3.1%

      11 min to 20 min 59 sec late 1.2%

      21 min to 30 min 59 sec late 0.2%

      31 min and over 0%

      Cancelled 0.2%

  5. No.

  6. Sydney's transport is a shambles. CityRail trains are constantly late, always dirty and on occasions are cancelled without notice. Having said that, the closer you live to the centre of the city (or the place where you will be working) transport will be better because travel times will be less.

Sydney's government bus system is also terrible. Buses are so overcrowded in peak times that they often have to skip multiple stops because they can't fit more people in.

Sydney, unfortunately, is a very car-dependent city. Of course, during non-peak times, buses and trains are less crowded, but then again, not many people use public transport during non-peak times to get to work.

Although I'm a Sydneysider through and through, I personally admire Melbourne for having such an efficient tram system.

I'm somewhat of an urban transit enthusiast, and a modern light rail system is exactly what Sydney needs.

There is a plan to build several European-style metro lines, but they are a long way off from even getting started, and have been criticised by several urban planners worldwide.

They're also too little too late.

I'm very much an advocate for a modern light rail system for Sydney.
