Sydney Sixers v Perth Scorchers – Big Bash League, 2012/13 – Match Recap – Sixers succumb to Scorchers in 7-wicket defeat
Having lost a chance to claim the Big Bash League title in the inaugural edition of the tournament last year, after succumbing to the Sydney Sixers in the final, the Perth Scorchers managed to claim a 7-wicket win over the defending champions, in their BBL
2012/13 match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on December 16.
The defeat brought to an end the formidable winning streak which had seen the Sixers lifting the BBL 2011/2012 trophy, and emerging victorious at the Champions League Twenty20 earlier this year in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757.
Having won the toss and decided to field first, the Scorchers ensured that the Sixers were never in the game to begin with. An intense bowling attack saw all five bowlers claiming at least one wicket each, while Player of the Match http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Beer-c1949 (4-0-19-2),
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alfonso-Thomas-c991 (4-0-27-2), and Hilton Cartwright (4-0-41-2) all picked up two each.
The top and most of the middle order failed to rack up any sizeable scores for the team. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Moises-Henriques-c2021 (3) fell prey to Thomas.
Middle-order batsmen http://www.senore.com/Cricket/George-Bradley-Hogg-c59047. By this point, the
Sixers were at a shocking 28 for 6 by the 10th over.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Brett-Lee-c48419 (22*) saw the rest of the innings through, and aided
by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Luke-Feldman-c1854 (12*), succeeded in getting the team total into triple figures, and enabling the Sixers to reach 113 by the end of 20 overs, at the expense of 9 wickets.
Opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Simon-James-Marshall-c90362 (26) yielded 51 runs, and after the dismissal of the latter at the hands of Mendis, Gibbs teamed up with Marcus
North (23) for a 49-run stand which got the team up to 100.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gibbs-c60021 was eventually bowled by Feldman in the 18th over, and North followed him back to the pavilion in the very next over, sent packing by O’Keefe. However, by now the team was an inch away from victory, and Cartwright (5*) and skipper Simon
Katich (8*) got them over the finish line, reaching 114 with 7 wickets in hand, and 4 balls remaining. The victory is the Scorchers’ first in the tournament, from the three games they have played so far.
