Sydney Test: England dominate Australia until tea
England reached 73 runs in their first innings until the tea break of the second day’s play at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Both the openers Andrew Strauss and Alistair Cook remained unbeaten.
Australia started the second session at 230 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Ben Hilfenhaus and Mitchell Johnson helped their team reach 280 after the lunch break. Before that, it seemed as the Australian team would be dismissed for less than 200 runs.
Johnson was the only Australian batsman to score a half century. He was dismissed for 53 when Australia had scored 265 runs in their first innings. Hilfenhaus then added a few more runs to the total and was the last man to get out. He scored a valuable knock
of 35 runs.
James Anderson was the pick of the English bowlers as he has been throughout this season. He took four wickets in the innings and raised his series tally to 21 wickets.
Tim Bresnan also bowled well and gave three crucial breakthroughs to the English team. He dismissed Shane http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 and Mitchell Johnson in the innings. Chris Tremlett, Graeme Swann and Paul Collingwood took one wicket each.
When England came out to bat, Captain Andrew Strauss attacked the Australian bowlers and he reached 49 runs off just 47 balls. He hit six boundaries and one six in his innings. At the other end, Cook remained patient and scored 19 runs before the session
was over.
Australia would have liked to dismiss at least one of the English openers before the tea break but the bowlers failed to do so. Johnson and Hilfenhaus were hit for a few runs although they did swing the ball at pace.
Debutant http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Beer-c1949 was not given any over before the tea break. With runs flowing all over, Beer may be the answer to the English batting in the next session.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 cannot afford to give England a big first innings lead and will have to find some solution to counter English batsmen.
