Can anyone tell me if a townhouse comes with a plot of land that is big enough to do some gardening/planting a few trees?

  1. some do and some come with a paved courtyard only. planning of trees may be subject to Strata/Body Corporate regulations, so check with them first.

  2. If you buy a townhouse, you can do what you like in your backyard but always check with the strata manager.  We have a townhouse with a backyard that was a mess.  We dug everything up and then turfed it and fixed up the garden, got rid of the other little garden and now it looks wonderful.

You must get permission if you want to attach anything to the actual building, though, like an awning or anything similar.

To answer your question, though, all townhouses are different but in general, you will get a bit of land out the back.  Yes, some are paved and some have lawn but I would say that most are definitely big enough to do gardening and to plant trees, just don't plant trees that are too big as they will be close to the building.  We have planted natives bushes/shrubs no taller than 2 metres.

Our backyard area that has lawn is about 32 square metres if this helps.  We also have two paved areas.  It is 9 metres across and a few metres deep.
