Question:

Sydney vs Melbourne?

Were moving to Australia from New Zealand in the next 6months.

I want to go to Sydney and the other wants to go to Melbourne. I like fast places that are busy and lively and she likes slower places that are still fast, busy and lively.

Which of the two cities are safer? Which has better employment opportunities? We will look at retail, office or maybe factory work.

I know Melbourne is slightly cheaper.. but is it REALLY that much cheaper to live in than Sydney. We don't want to live in the CBD. But within 30mins of the CBD.

Weather is kind of important, and we like shopping, occasionally hit the beach, love night life and socialising.

Is Melbourne really better than Sydney as so many people say? And why do they say that? A culturally diverse place isnt all that important to us. We just want somewhere where we can get a job, have a social life, relax when we want to, have fun, and live life to the full. And a place that has everything we need..

thanks heaps!

  1. there both big major cities, with plenty of nightlife. As you mentioned, Melbourne is far cheaper than Sydney! However, there are alot more newzealanders in sydney although i doubt you would care bout that. Both have nice climates, hot in the summer (25 degrees +, can reach 40 degrees a few summer every summer), mild in the winter. Melbourne is slighlty cooler in the winter probs ranging around 10-15 degrees and Syndey more like 13-18 degrees.

Both have great beaches, Sydney has the famous Bondi beach, Melbourne has the Mornington Peninsula. Melbourne has the edge on Sydney in the shopping department, hence its given the name 'the shopping capital'. Chadstone, located in the Melbourne suburbs in the largest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere. ITS HUGE!

You can get a job in both cities no worries. Both are great cities, either one would be fine.

  2. I'm grew up near Sydney but am now living in melbourne.

Sydney is really nice city but it isnt as cultured as Melbourne. melbourne is much easier to get around in - driving and by public transport. It has the best nightlife, friendlier people, higher wage, and its also the fastest growing city in australia around 1500 people moving here each week. There is restaurants and bars galore, galleries, beautiful parks, awesome shopping for everyone - we have the largest shopping mall in australia in chadstone!!

It is alot colder here though, to the point that im not sure i can survive another winter here haha. But it is a really pretty city and theres plenty to do...

Sydney has much nicer beaches, but we have the gt ocean rd with apollo bay, lorne, etc etc along it and the apostles which isnt that far of a drive away.

The rivalry started between sydney and melbourne when they were trying to choose which one should be the capital city, so they ended up just making it canberra!

I'm pretty biased!! but i hope this helps a little :)

  3. Melbourne is better if you like sport, shopping and family friendly environment

Sydney is more for the arts, fame and to be around plenty of people and are rich enough to afford a home there.

Sydney is one if the busiest cities in the world!!

Im from Melbourne, and ive been to Sydney and it was too crowded

    Melbourne anyday!!!

  4. Comparing Sydney and Melbourne is like comparing Rome and Paris.  Melbourne is not "better" than Sydney... it's just different (and certainly cheaper).

I'm a Melbournite -- and have friends that I visit often in Sydney.  There are really only two things I can't stand about Sydney -- neither of which the locals have any control over.  1.  Sydney is WAY more humid than Melbourne.  I hate being all clammy; and constantly feeling the need to shower while I'm up there.  And...

    2.  Their road network was designed by a schizophrenic.  I get soooooo lost up there that I've taken to getting other people to drive me around.  And believe me, the locals are none-too-pleasant if you work out you're in the wrong lane about halfway onto the bridge or into the tunnel.  So unless you've got nerves of steel, don't drive in Sydney.

Other than that -- I love visiting Sydney.  They have great restaurants, and everything's so close.  Melbourne (on the other hand) is really spread out.  An hour (or so's) drive out of Sydney and you're already in the bush.  An hour's drive out of Melbourne and you're still in the suburbs.  Oh... and Sydney has the reputation of having Australia's stroppiest cops.  (Probably from driving too many times through Redfern.)  LOL

As for getting work... Sydney's no easier or worse than Melbourne when it comes to getting a job.  It depends on your qualifications and what type of employment you're looking for.  One of my mates moved to Sydney because there weren't any openings in Melbourne for an ambulance paramedic (go figure?!).

For mine... the main thing that would decide on whether I moved to Melbourne or Sydney would hinge on "freedom".  In Melbourne, you jump in your car and drive to work.  You then have the freedom to go wherever you want to afterwards.  Unfortunately, only the "fabulously rich" can afford to drive into Sydney.  The tolls are exhorbitant, and parking is a nightmare (if it doesn't come packaged with your salary).  So most of my friends get the ferry to work, and the car only comes out on the weekends.

Both city's are fabulous in their own right.  So the choice comes down to cost of living and ease of access.

  5. Sydneys a nightmare to drive around, very confusing, streets that lead to no where if you dont know where your going ?

Melbourne is a breeze to travel to & from work.

both are cosmopolitan cities with a paparazzi of food cafes, cinema's,entertainment venues....................if you like the cold in winter try Melbourne,Sydneys a lot warmer by a couple of degreees

  6. Sydney is 19th most expensive city to live in, in the world. while Melbourne is further behind at number 60 most expensive city in the world...meaning Melbourne is way less expensive to live in. see link:
