Syed Modi International: Soon Huat Goh knocks out Sourabh Varma in first round encounter
Malaysia’s emerging player Soon Huat Goh found an amazing start on Indian soil as he played impressive badminton against his local rival Sourabh Varma and ousted him in Men’s Singles first round at Syed Modi International India GPG in Lucknow, on Wednesday,
December 19.
Malaysian shuttler, who is un-seeded in the tournament, showed his superb skills in the arena and toppled his higher ranked Indian challenger who was sixth seed in the Men’s Singles main draw.
Soon Huat was incredible fast on court as he played with wonderful aggression and moved around in all corners quite comfortably. He crushed Sourabh in straight sets while grabbing a reasonable total on the board.
Meanwhile, the higher ranked local shuttler put in extra effort to create pressure on his Malaysian rival but he failed to stay positive and eventually bowed down to Soon Huat in straight games without leaving a strong impact on the crowd.
In the first set, the impressive Soon Huat delivered a staggering feat on court as he played shots with commanding control from opening points.
The in-form Soon Huat proved that he has got top class skills on court and ultimately successful in getting a strong position on court.
However, the local shuttler also played attacking badminton and stayed close on the board until the end of opening half.
After the break, both contestants played positive and composed badminton on court and reached at the ending points of opening set.
At this stage, Soon Huat controlled his nerves and played with precision and remained successful in taking the ending points to end up the first set with a close 21-19 margin on the board.
In the second game, Soon Huat played with stunning speed without sparing any opportunity for Sourabh to get a good rhythm.
The powerful smashes and net killings kept Soon Huat ahead of his rival all the way until the one-minute interval in second game.
Sourabh could not show strong performance in the second set of this contest as his opponent Soon Huat played positive badminton and grabbed the game with a comfortable total of 21-14.
Malaysian shuttler remained successful in winning this opening round match in an amazing fashion with a reasonable 21-19 and 21-14 score on the board.
