Syed Modi Memorial India Open GP Gold: Sourabh Varma stuns Tommy Sugiarto at top-16 stage
India’s Sourabh Varma proved that he has what it takes to become a world beater as he crushed higher ranked Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia in the Men’s Singles pre-quarter-final of the Syed Modi Memorial India Open GP Gold 2011, on Thursday, December 22, in
India.
The World Number 72 Varma was in smashing form when he played against Sugiarto, who is currently placed at number 17 in the Men’s Singles world rankings. The Indian ended the straight-set fight in a classic way and sent his rival packing in just 38 minutes.
Varma, who was enjoying the support of huge home crowd, played with precision and won the opening game with a decent score. In the second game, the Indonesian tried to find his flow but failed as his local opponent was in complete control of the game. Varma
finished second set with a good margin and emerged as the winner in straight games.
In the starting points of the first set, Sugiarto played dominating badminton and remained successful in setting up a comfortable lead of 7-2. At this stage, Varma increased his speed in all areas of the court and scored 7 consecutive points to end the domination
of his higher ranked challenger. However, Sugiarto managed to take a small lead of 11-10 until the one-minute break.
After the break, both shuttlers snapped each other’s heel by playing at their best speed. The score was quite close until the ending phase of the opening set. Varma was playing well at the net whereas Sugiarto was quicker in executing smashes. The score
was 17-17 when the Indian scored four consecutive points and won the set with a margin of 21-17.
In the second game, Varma was ahead of Sugiarto in the opening points. However, the Indonesian managed to level the score at 10-10. Both shuttlers played at their maximum speed and reached at 14-14. At this stage, Sugiarto made a few unforced errors that
helped the Indian to build a comfortable lead.
Varma missed no chance of scoring points at the concluding stage and finished the game with a 21-17 score on the board. This straight-set match ended in 38 minutes with a score of 21-17 and 21-17.
