Syed Modi Memorial India Open Grand Prix Gold: An overview
The last major tournament of current year, Syed Modi Memorial India Open Grand Prix Gold, ended on Sunday, December 25, in Lucknow, India. Out of five titles in all categories of the game, Thai shuttlers won two while Singaporean, Japanese and Indonesian
shuttlers won one title each respectively.
The opening match of the final day was Mixed Doubles final where Thailand’s Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam were up against Indonesia’s Muhammad Rijal and Debby Susanto. The Thai players were the top seeds in the tournament and played up to
the expectations.
In the first set of the match, the Indonesians played at their best speed and finished up the set with a wonderful margin. Nevertheless, Thai shuttlers made a strong comeback in the match as they played an attacking badminton and won the second game with
a reasonable difference.
However, in the final game of this title match, Thai players showed no mercy to their opponents in the whole set and crushed them with a stunning margin. The final result of this Mixed Doubles battle was 16-21, 21-18 and 21-11.
In the Women’s Doubles final match, Singapore’s Shinta Mulia Sari and Lei Yao played against Japan’s Maeda Miyuki and Satoko Suetsuna. The Singaporean duo put up superb show and showed no respect to the top seeded Japanese opponents. It was a good contest
as both sides played with aggression and precision.
However, the Singaporeans played to their full potential in the whole set and finished it in straight sets. The overall score of this Women’s Doubles final contest was 21-17 and 21-18.
In the Men’s Doubles final contest, Japan’s Naoki Kawamae and Shoji Sato were up against Indonesia’s Andrei Adistia and Christopher Rusdianto. It was the best fight of the day where both sides snapped each other’s heel and maintained thrill throughout the
match.
In the opening set, the Japanese duo showed their impressive skills against the Indonesians and won the set in a striking way. However, the Indonesian players made a stunning comeback as they won the second game in a one-sided way. In the final game, both
sides remained toe-to-toe until the ending points when the Japanese pair scored two consecutive points and took the game with a tight margin. The concluding score of this title match was 21-17, 12-21 and 23-21.
The fourth match was the most desired fight for the crowd as India’s Sourabh Varma was taking on Indonesia’s higher ranked and experienced player, Taufik Hidayat, in the Men’s Singles final. Taufik, who was desperately looking for a title in the current
year, played to his maximum potential against the spirited Indian and grabbed the title in a decent way.
Taufik did not face tough resistance in the opening set of the game and won it with a comfortable score. However, the second game was tight when both players remained close throughout the set. In the ending points, it was Taufik who played well and ended
the fight with a decent score of 21-15 and 21-18.
In the Women’s Singles category, Thailand’s Inthanon Ratchanok emerged as the winner without playing the final contest as her opponent and team-mate, Porntip Buranaprasertsuk, conceded a walkover.
The India Open GP Gold was the ending tournament of 2011 which awarded precious ranking points to shuttlers. These points will help them in qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics, which will start from July 28, in London, England.
