Sylvia Fowles erupts with 28 as Chicago Sky beat San Antonio Silver Stars 85-73– WNBA Recap (Part 3)
After a nightmare first half from the floor, the San Antonio Silver Stars brought on reserves Jia Perkins, Danielle Robinson and Jayne Appel. The trio immediately made an impact. Appel started the quarter for San Antonio with a
layup on Sophia Young’s dish.
A Sylvia Fowles’ 2 point shot later, Young made another layup and Jia Perkins followed with a jumper on Robinson’s assist. Robinson then made a layup at the 6:32 mark and 1:10 later Young knocked down a jumper and then followed
it with a layup to bring the deficit down to 14 at 41-55.
But just when the Silver Stars sniffed a comeback trail, Dominique Canty nailed a jumper and Erin Thorn knocked down back-to-back three’s to propel the lead at 22. By the time, the third quarter ended, Sky led the Silver Stars
by 66-46 and the game virtually decided.
Things got from bad to worse for the Silver Stars when Michelle Snow erupted with a seven point spurt early into the final frame, to increase Chicago’ s lead to 25 points, their biggest of the game.
Staring at massive deficit with just 8:21 left on the clock, the Silver Stars finally got their shooting touch. Sophia Young, Becky Hammon and Robinson raised the ante and combined for 17-4 run in the next run minutes to slash
the deficit to 12 points with 4:11 to go.
Kraayeveld nipped the surge with a three, but Jia Perkins responded with five straight points to make it a 10 point game with 2:45 to go. A Fowles free throw later, Robinson knocked down another shot from downtown, but Tamera Young
made two shots in a hurry to end all resistance in Chicago’s route to victory.
Fowles finished with 28 points and 17 rebounds, three less than the total rebounds the Silver Stars managed to clutch on the night.
San Antonio coach Dan Hughes said admitted that his team had to face something special on the night and said after the game ``That's about as dominating a presence in the post that I have ever seen, and I've coached over 300 games.''
Fowles herself indicated that with injuries a thing of the past, she is starting to feel her game
``This is the first year I can be myself,'' Fowles said. ``My first two years I got hurt, last year was an off year for me. But this season, I feel like I can broaden my horizons and get better.''
