Sylvia Fowles pounds a double-double as Chicago Sky beat Tulsa Shock 72-54 – WNBA Recap
Sylvia Fowles recorded a double-double with a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds as Chicago Sky defeated the league-worst Tulsa Shock 72-54 on Wednesday night.
An all-time high 13,838 people came to witness the game and Sky responded with an 18-point romp. It was the seventh consecutive road defeat for Tulsa and second in a row for interim coach Teresa Edwards. On the other hand, it was Chicago’s third straight victory at Allstate Arena.
Fowles, who is WNBA’s scoring leader with 20.4 points per game, also had two steals and two assists and ended the night on an 8 for 17 shooting from the field and 5 for 6 from free throw line. Epiphanny Prince added 11 points, a game best six assists, five steals and four rebounds in the victory.
Tamera Young ended the game with 10 points and four rebounds for Chicago, who bounced back from their previous defeat to the New York Liberty. Andrea Riley came off the bench to led Tulsa with 12 points.
Chicago shot 48.5 percent (32 for 66) from the field and limited the Shock to just 30.4 percent (17 for 56). They opened the first quarter with eight unanswered points and maintained their hold on the visiting team on their way to a 12-point lead, 21-9, going into the second frame.
Tulsa cut the lead to ten, 23-13, early in the second quarter, however, Chicago responded with 16- 7 run to stretch their lead to 19 points, 39-20, with 03:03 remaining in the second period. Jackson then scored a lay-up while Riley and Lewis followed her with three 3-pointers to make it a 12-point, 43-31, contest at halftime.
In the second half, the Shock tried their level best to slip in closer. They limited Fowles to just seven points and Lacy’s lay-up with 03:49 to go in the third quarter trimmed the deficit to five, 47-42. However, Chicago responded with a 8-2 run to take a 55-44 lead into the fourth.
Sky were never threatened in the fourth quarter and snatched their seventh victory of this season quite comfortably in the end.
Shock Guard Sheryl Swoopes praised the opposite team at the end of the game and said, "The team itself has grown tremendously. The talent level that has on this team today compared to the last time I have played them is a lot better than it was then.”
