Sylvia Fowles sizzles as Chicago Sky beat New York Liberty 85-73 – WNBA Recap
Sylvia Fowles erupted with a season-high 27 points and nailed 11 rebounds as Chicago Sky knocked down the New York Liberty 85-73 on Friday night at Allstate Arena.
The 25-year-old centre scored 10 of her points in the third quarter of the game, shooting a terrific 10-for-16 from the field and 7-for-8 from free throw line. Epiphanny Prince scored 17 points and eight assists while Michelle
Snow also racked up 13 points and seven rebounds for Chicago, who have now won three in a row.
Cappie Pondexter headed New York with 20 points and eight rebounds, shooting 12-for-14 from free throw line. Essence Carson came off the bench with 12 points and five assists while Kia Vaughn had 10 points and five rebounds for
Liberty, who have now dropped three on a trot.
Both the teams maintained parity in the early stages of the game and the game was tied at 12-12 with 02:23 to go in the quarter. However, in the passage that followed, New York went on a 7-2 and carried a 19-14 lead into the second
period. The second quarter also proved to be scramble. The game witnessed some hardcore defence in the period. There were a lot contested shots and double teams as both team only scored 17 and went into the break with the score at 36-31, advantage New York.
Trailing by five at the break, Sky reeled off an 8-3 run early in the third to tie the game at 39-39. Plenette Pierson’s lay-up on the next possession again put the Liberty ahead by two points. However, Snow responded pair of free
throw and followed it with a jumper to give Chicago a 43-41 lead.
Nicole Powell then nailed a jumper to knot the game at 43 with 05:58 remaining in the third. The Chicago outfit had come into its own by now and they answered back with a 12-2 spurt to go ahead by 10 points, 55-45, and turned the
game on its head. Sky didn’t stop there and made good on all their free throws in the last minute and a half to take a 63-49 advantage into the fourth. They never looked back after that and maintained a double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter.
