Sylvia Fowles stars as Chicago Sky carve out a 71-69 win over Atlanta Dream – WNBA Recap
On Sunday night at the Allstate Arena, Chicago Sky came out with a narrow 71-69 victory over Atlanta Dream, courtesy of two match winning free thrown from Sylvia Fowles.
Fowles finished the night by shooting the ball 6 of 8 from the field to lead her team with 21 points and 12 rebounds in game where none of the other Sky starters crossed double figures.
The main difference in the game was provided by the Chicago bench which was extremely resourceful. Eshaya Murphy scored 13, Sonja Petrovic managed 12 and Lecoe Willingham chipped in 11 points.
At the other hand, despite having three player making sizable contributions, Atlanta`s efforts were not enough and their three game winning streak came to an end.
Angel McCoughtry led her team in scoring with 21 points on an 8 of 24 shooting night. Sancho Lyttle scored 18 and Lindsey Harding managed to get 13 points.
The game was evenly matched up from the start and the best any team could manage was a 4 point lead in the opening period. Courtesy of a Murphy three pointer, Chicago led 19-16 after the first period.
Atlanta started off the second quarter with a 4-0 run but a 7-0 response from Chicago and saw them take a 6 point lead. However in the final minute of the half, Atlanta conjured up a 7-2 run to take a 33-30 lead.
The start of third quarter saw Dream come out with another 12-3 run and prolong their advantage into double figures. For the remaining time in the period, Chicago tried their best to make their way back but at
the close of the third, Atlanta still led 54-46.
However Sky were not looking to give up that easy and with their determination they opened up the fourth quarter on a 12-3 run to take a one point lead over Atlanta.
In the next minute, Chicago continued to pile on the pressure with a 6-2 burst and by the time there were 2:23 remaining, Sky were leading 68-61.
Atlanta responded with 5 quick points from McCoughtry which was followed up by another three pointer from Lyttle with 47 second remaining allowing them to take a one point lead.
On the following possession, Fowles was fouled on her way to the basket and she made two clutch free throws to give Chicago the lead however with 33 seconds remaining on the clock.
There was enough time remaining for another twist in this one. However Atlanta were unable to find their shooting rhythm in the closing stages which left them with no choice but to foul Courtney Vandersloot with
about 14 seconds remaining who made her way to knock down one of the free throws and help her team hold one by 2 in the end.
