Sylvia Kavita Kumares clinches Girl’s Singles Under-16 title in National Junior Circuit GP Finals
Malaysia’s young female player, Sylvia Kavita Kumares, has clinched the Girl’s Singles Under-16 title by beating Cheah Yee See in the final of the 100Plus National Junior Circuit GP Finals 2011, at Juara Stadium, Malaysia, on Sunday, May 22.
The 16-year-old delivered an impressive performance against Cheah See and faced no considerable trouble in beating her opponent, in a straight-set match by a 21-16 and 21-16 score. In both sets, Sylvia spared no chance for her rival to dictate the pace at
any stage of the game.
After winning the match, Sylvia said, “I am really pleased to win the title because this is my last year in the Under-16 category. Overall, I am satisfied with my performance in this tournament and I am looking forward to making my mark in the Under-18 category
next year.”
Sylvia started playing six years ago and has been putting up a remarkable show from the last three years. In 2009, she grabbed the Girl’s Singles Under-14 title and remained consistent in her performances in all the national events.
The talented shuttler expressed that she took inspiration from her coach, Wong Mew Choo, who is the former World Number One in the Women’s Singles category. Sylvia said, “Mew Choo is my idol and I have always wanted to be like her and win tournaments on
the big stage.”
Sylvia is targeting to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games.
Sylvia added, “Ultimately, my goal is to qualify for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. It is still a long way to go but I have to keep training hard in order to achieve my goal.”
The impressive shuttler is determined to continue her winning run at the senior stages. She knows that she has a long way to get at the top in Malaysia, as there are many shuttlers in the national squad who are better in every aspect of the game.
Through her superb performance in yesterday’s final, she has sent a clear message to other senior shuttlers that she has the potential to give them a good fight and make her mark at the highest level of the game.
