What was the symbol used by the United States to show a family member had died in combat in WWII?

  1. Well, if the veteran was part of the VA, you can get a veterans burial. not sure what you mean by symbol. something for the family to have?

  3. It was a gold star.  People would put little flags with stars on them in the window or another visible place representing a family member was currently serving.  If the person died while serving a gold star flag was used.

  4. The "Blue Star" Flag goes back to Cleveland Ohio in 1917. It was reinvented by Capt. George H. Maines in 1942.

    The "Blue Star" denotes 1 family member serving. The "Gold Star" denotes 1 family member that died in service. This has not changed since 1917.
