Symetra Tour unveils schedule for the 2012 season
Symetra Tour has unveiled its 2012 season schedule, officials told on Thursday.
According to the details, the Tour will conduct 16 tournaments in various locations, with a hefty purse of $1.8 million. The tournaments are slated to be played in 12 states that also include Mexico.
LPGA Commissioner Michael Whan said that the Tour decided to spice up the sport by staging events in different places, giving international players an opportunity to play on their favourite courses.
Symetra Tour is (Ladies Professional Golf Association) LPGA’s developmental tour, which entitles memberships to pro players and amateurs who win qualifying events.
The Tour is known for holding good events across the globe and the 2012 season will also see some good developments in the procedure of the tournaments.
Whan, who was happy following the announcement from Symetra Tour, expressed that the Tour came up to the expectations of LPGA in particular and the players in general.
He said that the Tour has provided young players plenty of opportunities since its launch and keeping the spirit of golf intact is its ultimate goal.
"We see the Symetra Tour as the best pathway for up-and-coming female professionals to earn their way to the LPGA Tour," Whan said.
Women players have long been seeking a springboard to reach the bigger stage — LPGA. However, Symetra has acted as a good ladder for a number of players to prove their worth on a bigger level.
He went on to say that the Tour has come up with a new idea that involves plenty of exemptions.
"By offering 10 exempt spots, we are solidifying the Symetra Tour as the proving ground for the LPGA and creating what amounts to a year-long battle to see which 10 players will earn equal playing status on next year's LPGA Tour," he stated.
Whan informed that the Tour will formally start next month and the first event is going to be the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic.
The tournament typically starts in March every year. The last year, it was played from March 25-27.
In addition to Natural Charity Classic, there will be another key event, Daytona Beach Invitational, which will be played in September. The tournament will formally conclude the Tour.
