Synchronized ice skating team?

I have an opportunity to be on my rink's synchronized skating team and I don't know if I should do it? Is it fun? I feel like I will hold them back because I am worse then them. I also spin the "opposite" way. What do you other synchro people think?

  1. I do synchro and we have like 4people that spin and jump th otha way. They dont hold us back, they just gotta do stuff th otha way! Its hard for them for stuff like twizzles aswell, but they arent th worst on th team thats for sure. Trust me, if you do the synchro at your rink you'll see you wont be th only one tht spins th wrong way!! Its really fun, I recommend it =]

  2. I did Synchro for four years. We went to Nationals every year I was on the team. We had two or three "left handed" skaters.

For Synchro they learned to spin and jump "right handed" though they still skated "left handed" for singles. I really don't think the direction you spin should be a determining factor in choosing whether or not to do synchro. The left handed skaters on my team learned to spin the other direction. I think you can too.

Also you said, "I feel like I will hold them back because I am worse then them."

For this concern I would talk to the coaches and see what they think. If they are not concerned with your skating abilities, then it may be a good experience for you.

When I started synchro I was one of the worst on the team. I was not a "strong" skater. I didn't have much power or speed. I was even still a little shaky when I skated. However by the end of the four years I was one of the fastest and strongest skaters on the team. It not only helped me gain a great experience in teamwork, but I also gained a lot of abilities to help my singles skating (edge quality/control, footwork, power/speed, etc...)

I really enjoyed my time as a synchro skater. Just being part of a team  gives skating a whole new level of "fun".  It is different for every individual, but if you are leaning towards doing it I would say give it a try or you will never know! :)
