CEO of Starbreeze, Mikael Nermar states that Syndicate will not be looking to compete with the Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 despite sharing the same genre.
The first-person shooter market has to be one of the most saturated when it comes to the video games industry as nearly every other game seems to add another title to the long running list of FPS games.
While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 are the two biggest titles out there at the moment, others such as Killzone 3, Resistance 3 and Halo Reach are not far behind when it comes to sales and popularity among the gaming masses.
Throw in other titles such as Bulletstorm and Brink and one has to wonder if there really is room for another fps. For Starbreeze, it seems that the answer is yes.
The studio is responsible for bringing the Syndicate series back to life with a first-person shooter title after being approached by publishing giant, Electronic Arts.
Mikael Nermar stated, “We’d been asked by EA – they came to us,” before continuing to explain his confidence at being behind the helm of the project, “and this is what we know; this is where our expertise lies. So that’s why we made it an FPS.”
He went on to explain that they stuck to their strengths and were proud of the result, despite the genre being so crowded, “You have to trust your own skills and realize what your strengths are. I think we did that, and I’m extremely proud of the studio and the guys working on the team.”
The studio’s experience in the FPS market may just help Syndicate distinguish itself from other shooters but the real question remains as to whether it can pose a threat to Modern Warfare and Battlefield. Nermar does not seem to be too concerned, “I’m not saying that, if we do a shooting game, we have to go and compete with the Battlefields or Call of Dutys, but we have to have the right kind of shooting for the game we’re making.”
Whether or not Syndicate is a game worth remembering, one willl have to wait and see.
