  1. Syntax is basically how you arrange your words in a sentence.

    I won't do the homework for you, but I'll give you a hint: look at how the different groups of immigrants use English. They tend to have different patterns (syntax) of word usage according to the different countries they come from.

Sinclair was trying to make a point in the book.  He wanted to show the brutality and the uncleanliness of the meat packing industry in the early 1900s.  The wording of his writing (syntax) is strong and forceful.  He doesn't sugar-coat anything.  He speaks to the reader as if we were having a desperate conversation with him.  He talks about guts and gore.  If you want specific examples, you COULD search through your book.  You can also go to sparknotes.com...search for The Jungle.  Then go to Quotations Explained to see specific examples of his writing style.
