I am 14 years old and would love to learn how to use a synthesizer to make music like MGMT or Of Montreal. Do you know of any good synthesizers for under $200 that I can connect to a mac computer? Thank you so much

  1. I recommend not getting a synth right away, there are many kinds and you should fully have a grasp on what exactly you want before you buy something. If you want to experiment with different synth-like sounds, check out http://www.flstudio.com/ and download the Fruityloops Demo. There are tutorials on how to use it on their site. Also heres a video on what you can do with it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-k09iLmsq...

Don't be fooled by the style of music, by using different VST plugins you can make just about any kind of music from Rap, Rock, Techno, to even classical. Good luck :]

  2. Ive never seen an analog synth for less than 400.  I have the alesis micron (which is 400@guitar center) and it is an extremely versatile synth.  It has over 1000 sounds and all the sounds have live modeling.  overall this synth is the greatest purchase ive made.  you can hear it on youtube and you can play it at guitar center.

  3. I have bought the best deals at area pawn shops ... often with warranty! Of note for less that 200 USD I have  bought

    MicroMoog     $25   (1999)

    Korg X5D       $165 (2002)

    Korg Karma    $150 (2006)

    Roland RA95     $75 (2006)

    Alesis QS8     $150 (2007)

    Alesis QS6.1  $185 (2007)

    Emu PK-6       $175 (2008)

    Roland E 20        $5 (2008)

... to name a few! These are all pro to semi- pro models. You need to "play" with some to accurately determine your needs. If you need help in arranging look at Yamaha QY's, Roalnd E's and w's. I have been able to learn alot, then wheel and deal to purchase others that I like.
