Syphon Filter 4 may be under development, Devil May Cry collection to be unveiled at E3
Fans of the now classic Syphon Filter series have something to cheer about after news that Syphon Filter 4 may very well be under development.
The news comes after reports in which various gamers claim to have seen a post on the U.S. PlayStation Blog. The post itself was later taken down. According to various reports, Sony London seem to be responsible for bringing the franchise that has six titles
so far.
Another piece of information one can derive from the developer being a branch of Sony is that the game will be a most probably be a PlayStation exclusive title and highly unlikely to be released on PCs and Xbox 360s.
The London studio have not commented on the news, which has done nothing but fuel the speculation surrounding an announcement in the impending Electronic Entertainment Expo.
However, according the post on the website, the fourth instalment in the Syphon Filter series for consoles will revolutionise the way people play stealth games. The game is set for a release near the end of 2012 and will boast a completely new game engine.
The original Syphon Filter was released over a decade ago and received critical acclaim, with IGN ranking it in the top 20 of their ‘Top 25 games of all time’ on PlayStation. It was also re-released as one of the games available for download on the Sony
Ericsson Xperia Play.
Developed by 989 Studios, the game’s plot revolved around the game’s protagonists, the ever resourceful Gabriel Logan and the stunning Lian Xing, as they set about thwarting the release of the Syphon Filter virus.
The series went on to introduce weapons such as the air-taser, which is now a cult classic, as well as being the only other half decent stealth game on the market apart from Metal Gear Solid. Two more titles were released on PlayStation consoles, before
disappointing with their venture on to the PlayStation 2.
Syphon Filter did redeem itself with its two PlayStation Portable titles, namely Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror and Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow, with rumours seeming to suggest that the latest game will pick up where Logan’s Shadow left off.
If the rumours are true, it will be Syphon Filter’s first console title in over six years, yet whether or not any confirmation will be given at this year’s E3 is anybody’s guess.
Sticking with E3, other reports seem to suggest that a Devil May Cry collection may be unveiled at the gaming world’s mega event.
The game is set for an HD remake and will be exclusive to Sony’s PlayStation 3 console. The 10th anniversary edition will have all the previous DMC titles and one can be sure to expect a few bonuses and extra content thrown in as well.
