Syracuse Orange beat Marshall Thundering Herd 62-56 - NCAA Basketball Recap
Syracuse Orange are going through a very tough phase.
It’s been three weeks now since the accusations relating to the molestation of three players against their assistant head coach; Bernie Fine cropped up, and triggered a complete chaos in the whole camp.
However, the whole saga has least affected the in court brilliance of Orange players.
Just few hours ago, they proved their mental toughness by making short work Marshall Thundering Herd 62-56 to collect their 9th consecutive win of the NCAA Basketball Tournament 2011. It was an absorbing encounter with
both teams putting up a good fight inside the court; however Orange outclassed their opponents in all the departments.
Dion Waiters paced Orange with 15 points including 7 for 8 from the charity stripe. Kris Joseph was also superb. He sealed 11 points and pulled down 8 rebounds whereas Scoop Jardine accumulated 10 points.
For the Thundering Herd, Dennis Tinnon led with a game high 17 points and 15 rebounds. Damier Pitts added 10 while DeAndre Kane chipped in with his 9 and forced 10 rebounds.
On the night, turnovers were what cost Marshall the game, as Pitts added
"Turnovers really hurt us tonight, We had five or six in a row in the first half. That led to layups, and that hurt us."
Kris Joseph opened the scoring for Orange with a powerful dunk; however it was countered with a driving layup from Kane almost immediately. Both teams failed to find baskets regularly and stayed neck to neck for the first 6 minutes
with scores tied at 6 all.
However, Orange changed gears quickly and bolted a 10-2 run, capped by Dion’s layup to get ahead by 8-16. Marshalls failed to penetrate the D in next few minutes whereas Orange initiated another 10-2 run to get themselves in a
commanding position 26-10.
Robert Goff and Tinnon combined for 6 points in the last few minutes of the frame to ensure the lead did not get out of control. However Orange still found themselves in the driving seat by the end of half, leading by 31-18.
Marshalls needed to score quickly in the next frame to give themselves a chance of winning, however they failed. On the other hand, power players from Syracuse kept chipping in with points to ensure they maintained a healthy double
figure lead. The fate of the game was decided midway through the frame when lead swelled to 16 points 44-28.
In the last two minutes, Marshalls gained some momentum and scored quickly, but it was very late in the day as Orange had already cruised way ahead.
