Hey, i have a male syrian hamster and he's about 1 year and 8 months old. Recently he has become severely underweight, now you can see his ribs, and he is stumbling around, and not opening his eyes and breathing rapidly, shaking, and laying down to rest anywhere!

Is this his time to go? Or somebody please just help a little, thanks. Toby

  1. take him to the vet.

  2. It could be several problems.  I don't think it is old age because he has too many other symptoms.  It could be he caught a cold from you if you were sick and has a respiratory infection.  There may be fungus in the cage which could cause breathing problems.  He may have had a stroke.  As you can see it's very hard to tell because those symptoms could indicate many things.

Get your hamster to the vet ASAP.  Hamsters have a very delicate health and many times if they are hit with an illness they do not survive very long.

Okay, well he may also be severely dehydrated.  If he is too weak to drink then hold him in your hand and gently put his water bottle to his mouth and see if he can drink anything.

  3. Hold him by the scruff of his neck and see if his teeth are overgrown. If they are, he may not be able to open his mouth to eat, causing the malnutrition. Als, he may have wet tail (symptoms are diahreah, and of coarse, wetness on and/or around his tail.) If his teeth are overgrown, take him to the vet and get them filed down. If it's wet tail, get him antibiotics foir it (liquid only) and force feed it to him through a medicine squirter.) Otherwise tyake him to the vet, if they give you the option get him put to sleep so he doesn't have to suffer.

  4. vet yes but also check his teeth

if his teeth are really long., then that's probably why he's so skinny.

Hold him by the scruff of his neck, this makes him 'smile' and does not hurt hurt him.

  5. Take him to the vet immediately! Sorry your hamsters sick but if it comes down to it maybe they best thing to do would be getting the vet to put him asleep if theres nothing that can be done

    sorry and hope this helps
