Question:

Syrian Hamster Owners: Cage Help!?

by  |  earlier

Alrighty. I have posted many a questions about this and other cages. I have gotten many different results. Please, tell me if this cage is or is not right for a Syrian hamster. I'm getting one soon and want to give him/her the best of care. Also, if you don't think this is a good cage, and if you have one that works well, please mention it :)

Here's the cage: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752706

I would replace the tubes (for they would grow too small for my hammy) with safe hammy ladders (or something to help him/her get up there)

  1. i believe i replied to one of your other posts... but i believe the link in the first answer is an awesome cage. it already has ladder and wheel and everything. the second one is kind of big which would make it difficult to lather love on a "new" hamster, especially if it is a tad scared of his new friend.

  2. I would recommend something a little bigger. I bought this cage for my hamster. She loves to climb around on the bars.

    or you could try

  3. This is what i did...

I went to the store and bought a big plastic container then i went to the Lowe's and bought PVC tubing along with some PVC bends and other pieces like that and when i got home i drilled some holes in the lid and put in his bedding and toys then i cut and created cool tubes for him to climb in.

Then i got another hamster so i bought another container and atached the 2 together with a piece of PVC pipe.

    hope it helps

  4. It's pretty good. I would personally say it's a little on the small size, but a hamster could still live happily in it. I would recommend this more spacious AND cheaper cage: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js...

    or

Just make sure that whichever one you get, you need to add chew toys and other little toys for extra entertainment :)

  5. Its to small, more then half the cages in our pet stores for hamsters  ( in fact most animal cages) is to SMALL. Because of this many people without research on the pet think these cage sizes are 'OK'

Your best cage for your hamster ( and even way cheaper!!) is to build it a 'bin cage' all you gotta do is find one nice plastic bin (walmart, target, staples) 18 inch's by 15-16 or up would be a good size.  It then takes a few hammy accessory's, and holes to drill for air ventilation.

getting your hammy out from bin cages gives you VERY easy access, not to mention they can't 'bar chew' the cage which is good cause it lowers the risk of your hammy breaking their teeth. And Don't forget a hamster wheel very large size! The standard Syrian hammy wheel ends up being outgrown very fast~ I learned that when I did it myself.

    good luck!

  6. No! That cage in your post is far too small even for dwarf hamsters! 1st answers links are far too small. I agree with the poster who said a martin's cage! Yes one of those, all these so called 'hamster' cages are far too small for syrians and usually too small for dwarfs. Do more research. In the wild hamsters travel for miles in a night searching and foraging for food, evading predators (you don't have to replicate the predator part ;) ) so they need lots of space. A wheel can be a useful toy but does NOT mean you can skimp on cage size or out of cage time (not in a ball either). Hamsters, if treated well take as much looking after as rats, if not more because they are far far more active and need lots of stimulation whereas rats have each other to play games with.

Plan your hamsters habitat bearing in mind it's wild habits. Lots more floor space than height, so if you get a martin's cage think about how you can put lots of shelves in to break falls. A rabbit cage with a meter wide base is great, again you might have to break falls and make sure the bars are only 1cm apart. You can find cages second hand pretty cheap, check out yard sales, car boots, ebay and local papers. You will have to disinfect them first but that's pretty easy to do, rinse and let it dry for a day or two.

Please think about the hammy's habitat...don't just buy a cheap cage...it will be the hamsters home for maybe 3 or more years...

  7. Its ok, but a bit small.

I honesty would get a rat-sized cage from the martins cage company. Much more bang for your buck.

  8. yes that cage would be ok i think for your serien hamster. I went into pets at home for mine though and it was bigger than that and my hamster loved it. it had your base oviously then it had 1 shelve near the door on that side wiv a ladder going up 2 that level then there was another level at the top it was so cool also it came wiv the wheel and bed plus food bowl and a starter kit etc it was gr8 x*x
