Question:

Syrian hamster cage question

I think my cage for my Syrian is too small. It's probably not more than 14x14x17, but the floor is covered by a wheel, stairs, and a little house to sleep in. It's 3 stories. But I have a guinea pig cage that's much larger. The bar spacing is about an inch or less. But in addition to horizontal bars, there's also vertical, so there's little squares basically. My question is, would she be able to get through the bars? And would she enjoy the extra space even though there aren't multiple levels? She always seems to want out of her cage, and sometimes gets so bored to the point she's laying upside down on the 3rd story on metal bars. Also, if you could suggest DIY toys besides TP rolls, it would be appriciated!

  1. Your cage does sound too small.  The guinea pig cage wouldn't be suitable.  A hamster can fit through any gap that they can squeeze their skull through; after the head is through they are very flexible and get through easily.  Also it might miss the levels.  I would save up for a new bigger hamster cage and leave it where it is for now.
