  1. y = x² - 4x - 2

    y = x - 2

    x² - 4x - 2 = x - 2

    x² - 4x - x -2 + 2 = 0

    x² - 5x = 0

    x(x - 5) = 0

    x = 0, or x = 5

    From y = x - 2 above:

    y = 0 - 2

    y = -2

    y = 5 - 2

    y = 3

    Solution set: (0, -2)(5,3)

    ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

    y = x² + 1

    y - x = 1, or y = x + 1

    x² + 1 = x + 1

    x² - x + 1 - 1 = 0

    x² - x = 0

    x(x - 1) = 0

    x = 0, or x = 1

    From y = x + 1 above:

    y = x + 1

    y = 0 + 1

    y = 1

    y = 1 + 1

    y = 2

    Solution set: (0, 1)(1, 2)

  2. x² - 4x - 2 = x - 2

    x² - 5x = 0

    x(x-5) = 0

    x = 0 or 5

    y = x - 2

    y = -2 or 3.

    2) x + 1 = x² + 1

    x² - x = 0

    x(x-1) = 0

    x = 0 or 1

    y = x+1

    y = 1 or 2.
