With the aid of a tail wind an airplane travels 3246 miles in 6 hours. During the return trip, the plane flies against the wind and the flight takes 6.2 hrs. What is the speed of the wind?

The answer is 9 for the speed of the wind but I dont know how to solve it for it and get the right answer.

  1. part 1

    d = vt

    d = (w+v)t where w = wind speed

    3246 = (v+w)6

    part 2

    3246 = (v-w)6.2

    2 eq, 2 unknowns

    get rid of fractions, multiply out

    32460 = 62v - 62w

    3246 = 6v + 6w

    v + w = 541

    w = 541 - v

    subst

    32460 = 62v - 62(541 - v)

    32460 = 62v - 33542 + 62v

    124v = 66002

    v = 532.2 mph

    w = 541 - 532.2 = 8.7 mph

    if I didn't make an arith mistake...
