They are noisy displays of waste , and should be replaced with quiet natural shade trees that do not use OPEC oil.

  1. False. The savings would be minimal but shade trees are nice too. The nice thing about trees is that nobody adds detergent or dyes to them. The only "practical" joke with a fountain that I thought was funny was when someone sank a can of calcium carbide in one. The can had a small hole in the lid to admit water drop by drop. When the carbide gets wet, it gives off acetylene, which bubbles to the surface and can be ignited, giving a flame burning in the middle of the water.

  2. This is not a question, but an opinion.

  3. Interesting topic to get soap boxy about...

I doubt it would make any difference at all.

  4. false.  relatively speaking, they use little energy or water.

if you want a glut of oil, use the law of supply and demand.  Given the increasing demands of India and China no matter what we do, increasing the supply is the clear answer

Drill for oil off our coasts and in Alaska.  Build new nuclear power plants.  Build more oil refineries.  Use more coal and natural gas.
