  1. some have better grip

  2. The mounts are of a universal size, you do want to consider where you'll be using your tripod, and under what circumstances.  Another consideration is the weight of your camera,  you don't want to buy a tripod that will only support 2-3 lbs, and try to mount 5 lbs of camera gear on it.

  3. What size camera do you have SLR or Compact

There are two sizes of s***w 1/4 (standard) and 3/8(large )

there are many different tripod weights and sizes.

Mini tripods good for table top and on walls or as like

    there are many large tripods

some have s***w twist legs to extend  some have clips that open and lock to extend the legs, and lever lockable

the are different heads clip in type, slide  ball and socket

some come in carry bags, some have straps attached to them selves.

some are lightweight for easy carrying when trekking ,some are very heavy take out the car set up and use.

I have a benbo Trekker 1 which i light weight in a carry case and twists into all shapes.

I also have a carbon fibre Mono pod with ball and socket head, I use this the most .

  4. All tripods fit by s******g into the base of the camera, which is the same for every camera. However tripods vary a great deal, the heavier the tripod, the steadier, but this obviously is impractical for transportation. The head you put on the tripod is also important depending on what you want to use it for, there are video heads, liquid filled heads, ball bearing etc.

Also look for a tripod that has a hook underneath if possible, this means you can hang your camera bag from it for even better stability. I'd recommend going into a camera shop and asking for advice though, and don't be afriad of buying second hand, you can often get a really good one for less cash. But basically, its the same as anything, you get what you pay for.

  5. all tripods as far as i know have the same mounting hole. it's basically a s***w that screws into a hole in a camera/video camera and some other things.

  6. Yes your camera should fit on any tripod as the s***w fitting beneth the camera is an industry wide standard. However some tripods are of differing design to others deploying varying materials eg aluminium / carbon fibre and will have differing heads fitted which allow adjustment of the camera angles. Best to try out a couple in a shop and also note that there are smaller table top sized tripods.
