TE Ben Watson unlikely for Cleveland Browns’ post-training camp roster – NFL News
Cleveland Browns’ tight end, Ben Watson, is one of the most vulnerable players on the team’s roster, facing waiver after training camp when the team prepares its 53-man roster.
It is unfortunate for Ben to have suffered so many health issues over the past season, concussion being the most serious, and this has made the player a risk to be retained by the side in the longer run.
His place on the roster becomes even more difficult given the team has a plenty of cap space and has a number of other players as alternatives. So it is less likely that they will risk including a player who is not hundred percent in health
and fitness.
Watson is due to earn $2.88 million this season, the last year of his deal, but since it is a non-guaranteed base salary, it should not be a concern for the management if he is let go.
Although the latest status of the player’s health is not known, he suffered a multiple concussions problem last season. His fitness can be a long-term issue and this makes the decision of retaining him even more difficult for the team.
Under the league rules, all teams can keep as many as 93 players on their rosters each during the offseason but just before hitting the regular season the strength has to be down to 53 players.
Browns are opening their training camp later this month and so far all players remain intact in the squad. Since a number of them are hired only to help in training camp, they will certainly be released.
Still, a number of players are not hundred percent prone to release i.e. Watson. A final decision to this end, however, will count on more than one factor. The factor of health and fitness gets the paramount importance but the player’s
potential to perform also has a say in the final take.
Another key player through uncertainty at the moment is quarterback, Colt McCoy. However, his possible cut will be down to his replacement that the team has found in form of rookie QB, Brandon Weeden.
Both players are safe and secure at the moment. The team has not officially hinted at their choice so far.
