Question:

TEW-432BRP router trouble?

I just got a new laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium. When I try to connect with my TRENDnet TEW-432BRP wireless router (protected by a WEP key), I run into a bit of trouble. My laptop recognizes the router but when I try to connect, the laptop does not prompt me to enter the WEP key. Later, after trying to connect, my laptop tells me that it can't connect to the router. I've tried to connect with a friend's laptop (with Windows XP instead of Vista) and I have not encountered any problems whatsoever.

This problem isn't isolated to my laptop. When my Nintendo Wii and PSP try to connect, similar problems occur. In these cases, I am prompted to enter the WEP key, but after entering the key, the Wii and PSP fail to connect.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Start with the WEP settings first. Do any of these connect if WEP is disabled?  If so, then re-enable the sercurity and re-enter the key.

On the Vista Machine, remove the "profile" for that first connection, it will then ask for the WEP key again. (Or you can change the SSID on the router which will also force you to re-enter the key for the "new" conenction.)

It could be that you are entering the Wrong key. If you set a key using a passphrase or word that word will be converted to a HEX code. On the Machines you connect, you have to enter the HEX code for WEP using the correct key!  You can't enter the phrase.
