Ok I work at Tgi fridays, im a watier. Ive been there for 3 months and have had no problems. I go into work today and a manager tells me that a customer came in from sep 24th and said that I charged a 8.00 tip on his credit card slip and that he did not authroize that. I was shown a copy of the check, it was 51.00 and it was authorized for 60.00, meaning I got a 9$ tip. On the credit card slip, the total was 60.00 and there is no sign of tamperment. Now they told me what the guy looked like and where he was sitting; and way back in septemeber I had a customer who left saying "im going to get you in trouble" and he was drunk.....and when I opened up the check book, the host was there and was suprised that I got a tip. SO I think it was him, and I have a witnessNow managment is telling me that this is grounds for termination, ect. What are my legal rights in this case? I mean, is it really my word against their word? and if they do fire me without any proof can I persue legal retribution

  1. In the future, when a guest tells you that they are going to get you in trouble, tell management right away. That way, whent hey pull some c**p like this, their credibility is already called into question.

What you can do now is get that host to back you up--when you say the host was there, I hope you mean for whenthe guy said he'd get you in trouble, but if the host saw the tip written in the book as soon as you opened it, that should be good too.

Unfortunately, they can fire you by taking the guest's word over yours. You could try suing but it's not too likely that you'd win. But you might have a decent case to seek unemployment.

  2. If there was no sign of tamperment, bring that up and fight hard. Do you have a track record of being dishonest? Bring that up too. Stick up for yourself, be confident, don't waver, and you will prevail. I've had several situations like this at my workplace. Don't let them see that you're weak. You look them straight in the eye and say this guy is an idiot, and that you would NEVER tamper with a customer's credit card slip. You explain exactly what happened with him, and get mad about it. Get offended. Stand your ground. h**l, you'll probably get promoted or get a raise.

This is a good time to prove yourself.

  3. I would say that there is not a lot you can do. It appears that it will be your word against the other persons. However if you can prove that the credit card slip was not tampered with you are lucky. Alot of it will depend on the size of the party. If it was a large group and the tip was added for that fact the customer may not have realized it. If I was you I would offer to give the man his money back and tell him you are sorry, but you didnt realize the tip had been added without his knowledge.
