  1. The draft will be reinstated because US will have many wars with other countries.

  2. No and No.

  3. Unless we get in a MASSIVE (WW3 type) war with some one (Russia/China), the draft will not be reinstated. In history, we have only started the draft when we are engaged in a large war (Civil War, WW1, WW2): Vietnam was the exception. I also agree with a lot of what desertviking said.

Women will not be in a draft for at least 100 years. It would create too many problems if there were a large number of women in combat roles. Where would they sleep? Would we create women only combat divisions? (what commander would knowingly send WOMEN to die? I don't know any male who would). Would we need to create new combat uniforms for women (incorperated bra's,ect...).

There are just too many problems for it to work. Also, any President who enacted this would be commiting political suicide. Only if there is a woman president and a major war, or if we are losing that war so badly that we are running out of soldiers to fight it (and we would most likely need a women president anyway) would a draft that included women be instated in the next 100 years.

  4. I doubt we'll have a draft as with the not so popular opinion of the current war we'll probably be pulling our military back soon.  If for some reason we would need to reinstate the draft I'm doubting women will be included.

  5. no and no

  6. The need for a draft has existed since the invasion of Iraq, however it will not happen because it would be political suicide to enact a draft.  Since we are lowering our standards for our volunteer army we basically have an economic draft which forces those with few career options to serve.  We are also drafting those already serving by not allowing them to leave when their enlistment is up.

The proposals for a draft that i have seen involve women and do not allow for the exemptions of past drafts.

  7. It won't be reinstated. The days are long gone when we need massed arrays of troops with aerial and armored support going up against similar forces. Before the attack on America of September 11, 2001 the armed forces had already begun the process of restructuring itself. Heavy armored units being transformed into Stryker brigades. The Air Force moving from a "garrison" posture to an expeditionary one, resembling what the Navy had been doing with its fleets all through the Cold War. The Marines were moving towards more and more special operations capable units compared to the relatively heavy composition of the marine expeditionary force.

With the publication of Field Manual 24-3, entitled "Counterinsurgency Operations" the stage is set for the increased use of small unit tactics to deal with the realities of the Long War. The enemy is now found in Beyit Al Shuhada (Martyrs Houses) instead of being arrayed in large numbers on a field of battle.

While all this is going on, all branches continue to meet or exceed their enlistment and retention quotas. Taken all together, these factors make a return to the draft totally unnecessary.

  8. Well first, a Draft does NOT increase the size of the military.

All a draft does, is allow the military to conscript enough people, to meet the recruiting and manning levels already set by Congress,

If not enough people volunteer to enlist.

Since we already meet the recruiting and manning levels as set by Congress, with volunteers.

A draft would be meaningless, since no one would actually be drafted.

    .........................................

Current Selective Service law, does not include women.
