*THIS QUESTION IS FOR A STORY I'M WRITING* How can someone get himself hospitalized?

I am writing a short story in which the main character intentionally causes something to put herself or himself in the hospital. As of now my only idea is purposely getting into a car accident. Any ideas please?

You mean a suicide attempt? Because if you survive a suicide attempt, you will be hospitalized. I overdosed, and was in the hospital for two weeks. Slitting your character's arms is also another way where they'll probably survive and get hospitalized.

Actually the previous answer is wrong. Acting really strange in public is NOT criteria for hospitalization. These are the criteria

a) danger to self (suicidal threats and/or plan)

b) danger to others (specific homicidal threats and/or plan)

c) inability to care for self (not eating/drinking anything for several days or weeks, and not bathing for months, etc). The last one is very hard to prove, but it can be done with a credible witness (such as a family member having witnessed these behaviors).

There is an illness known as Munchausen's Disease (I think that's how is spelt)..... anyway the sufferers of this illness are always trying to find things wrong with themselves so that doctors have to treat them, and if they can't the attention from a doctor that they crave, they will make themselves ill in some way to mimic a real illness in order to get themselves put into hospital and taken care of by doctors .....why don't you research this illness and make your main character a sufferer?

Lots of ways. OD on something - that will get you to the ER at least; go there and complain of acute pain in the lower abdomen, right side (unless you've already had an appendectomy) and get admitted for observation; I had a  patient who got out of jail and into our hospital by taking a lot of triple bromide pills.

There are risks, of course, and such tactics may not work, so your character needs a lot of motivation.

Someone can get hospitalized if they threaten or attempt suicide or if they are acting really strangely in a public place or something weird like that.

How bout this... the character was hanging out with a friend and the friend was holding a lighter that was lit. The character farts on the lighter and it ignites a huge flame and engulfs everyone.
