Publisher and developer THQ is looking forward to the next generation of home consoles and the opportunities it will bring in terms of new IP
As the inevitable announcement of Microsoft’s next generation console looms ever closer and the still mysterious level of silence from Sony builds up a fair amount of speculation, a number of parties are adding their voices to the next generation banter.
Sony have remained tight lipped on what gamers can expect in terms of the PlayStation 4, stating only that they believe in a 10 year life cycle for the PlayStation 3 and that they would be the last platform developer to come out with a next generation console.
Microsoft on the other hand have had more rumours and speculation to deal with than any of its competitors as everything ranging from a change at the top of its entertainment division to patents found online, have been scrutinised and analysed.
According to these sources, Microsoft plans to release two models of the Xbox 720, with one aiming to cater to the casual gamer and then second being the hardcore gaming device that everyone knows Xbox for.
A number of developers have also added their voice to the next generation console speculation with the lead designer at Epic games earlier stating that the time was right for the next generation of consoles to enter the market.
The president of Nintendo also echoed those sentiments in a recent investor call and now Brian Farrell, the CEO of THQ, has also spoken at how the next gen would bring a host of opportunities.
"I agree that as we approach a potential new console cycle it does introduce an element of risk. Another way to think about that is it does present a tremendous amount of opportunity," before continuing, "The best time to establish new IP is near the beginning
of a new cycle and we think that can provide a tremendous opportunity for the transformation of THQ."
So it seems one can expect a new IP from THQ for the next generation of consoles, that is if they can survive that long.
