THe Movie "21"... Are casinos allowed to hit them like that?

I just finished watching that movie, (don't want to give away anything) but for those who've seen that movie, are casinos allowed to hit counting people like that?

or even kill theM?

Yes, casinos have special exemption from the law, and they are allowed to hit, torture, rape or kill people that upset them.

No, seriously, of course they can't do that.  It would be illegal.  The most they can do is use reasonable force to detain someone who breaks the law in their casino.  And card counting is not illegal, unless you use a device to help you.

The fact is, card counting has been known for a long time.  Casinos love card counters, because the vast majority of people who try it have no clue what they are doing.  If they ever find a really good one who is making a lot of money from them, they simply ask them not to play Blackjack any more.

The scene in the movie is a throwback to the old days when the casinos had mob ties.  Now they are mostly large multi billion dollar corporations who aren't going to beat someone up and risk being sued or having their gaming license revoked.

No, that doesn't happen.  In the '60 or maybe '70s they were run by the mob and that could have happened to someone trying to cheat, but casinos are run by corporations.

No.  But many were started by organized crime bosses.  it has been rumored that it happens and the surrounding desert has a lot of bodies buried there.  Also the local police / sheriff do not enter the casinos unless they are invited in.

Usually if you are caught winning by counting cards or cheating, your picture is taken and you are banned from all casinos within a couple hours.  Casinos share information on any dishonesty and have a common phone line to contact all of the other casinos.

Note that with the large number of decks they use in a shoe, the odds of having a large advantage is greatly diminished.
