TIPS ON RAT BREEDING!!!!! plz!!?

Question

i know how to breed rats but im not sure how long i should leave my female rat and my cousins male rat together, plz someone tell me! also, if anyone has any advice or anything about breeding feel free to say!

If you want babies that badly contact a local rescue and offer to foster a pregnant female.  There is a constant need for foster homes and you would get the chance the raise babies without all the worry of finding them homes or of the ethical consequences.  It's a win win ^_^.  This will give you experience before bringing babies into the world.  

I do rat rescue and I will tell you that most of the homes that you find (especially the last few when you get desperate) will not be healthy for your rats.  I've taken in a rat that had been left to sit in her own pee so long she had sores from the acids eating her skin.  I've had cages handed to me with obvious bloodstains on dangerous wheels, rats given up with untreated infections etc.  When you breed an animal the animals produced (for they won't be babies forever) are your responsibility.  

I for one would not want to be the party responsible for the above disasters.  I blame the "breeder" as much as I blame the owner.  Doing rescue opens your eyes to the plight of the domestic animal.

If you don't know how long to leave them together, then you obviously aren't being mentored by a breeder.  Many people try to breed their rats and are horrified by the consequences.  The Goosemoose link provides personal stories, many from people in your situation.

Do you know about rat breeding?  have both rats been to the vet and scanned for genetic abnormalities or illnesses?  Do you have pre arranged homes for the litter that can range from as little as 6 to as many as 25 babies?

My advise? think this whole process through, many rats get killed or put into shelters from owners who thought it would be cute to breed them.   Contact a rattery first, find out everything you can about genetics, maybe they can help train you in the proper way before you just take your pet rat and breed her.

I had a litter once and let me tell you how hard it is to see deaf, blind, and deformed  babies rats because I didn't take the time to actually learn about what was going on because my rats were your average inbred petstore rats, that had I known of their genetic background would have NEVER bred them.

If you don't know something as simple as how long to keep them together you probably don't know much else of whats going on.

be responsible, at very very least buy a book on rats and rat breeding before you make a mistake.

I agree with the other answers, that you probably shouldn't be breeding them, but because we likely can't stop you...

You can leave them together for 2 weeks. Then separate.  If there is no litter in 21 days after that, then you can try repairing them.

You could also leave them together until she appears pregnant, but if you aren't sure about that, it's best to take him out before 3 weeks.

Remember too, to put the female into the males' cage, not the other way around, or she could kill him.

the best tip i can give is not to do it! if you know how to breed then why are you asking how long you should leave the female rat in there for!?

I am not trying to be mean or anything like that, i am just saying what i think. breeding is a HUGE responsibility. there are plenty or unwanted pet rats in this world. Please do not create any more. Rats can have up to 12 or more baby's per litter. i doubt that you can find good homes for all of them. sorry.

As others said, leave the breeding to the breeders. breeding animals is not something that should be done on a whim or for the experience of seeing cute babies. There is so much more that goes into breeding, besides allowing a male and a female together.

Anyone can breed animals, but it takes more than knowing that males and females can produce babies to do it correctly.

You may want to look at some of the horror stories from breeding gone bad, and then think it over again if you want your female to go through that.
