TIVO - Getting a software update...?

Question

I took my Pioneer - TIVO unit, with its own DVD recorder/player to have it fixed. Pioneer installed a new hard drive with TIVO version 5.2!!! (TIVO is not up to version 9+).

What I really, really need is to download a more current version of TIVO to my computer and use my cd burner to burn the image, pop the cd into my unit's dvd holder, and voila - the new version installs.

Here's why I need this: I have digital phone service, so TIVO's modem can't dial out, (I've tried a bazillion times). TIVO version 5.2 is so antiquated, it doesn't even have the option to use my wireless router to connect and get programming info, updated software, etc. My old hard drive had the current software, so this wasn't an issue.

So, I need that download to burn onto a cd!!!

I've heard that downloads like this exist out there in cyber space, but I've searched and searched and can't find any.

Can anyone help please!?!

I have never seen a TiVo update image that would work in the way you describe. All the TiVo images that I have seen out there are images of the entire TiVo hard drive.

What I would suggest doing is buying a new hard drive, hooking it up to your computer and using something line instantcake to make a new TiVo hard drive and then swap it with the drive that is currently in your TiVo unit. The downside with this is that you would loose all of your programs.

There is a chance that your TiVo might not support the newer versions.

If you are braver/more technical there are other utilities out there but I usually recommend instantcake because it is simple. I used it when I had a HD die in an old series 1.

I don't know how easy it is to get into a Pioneer, but the TiVo branded models are only a few torx driver bits away from upgrading.
