I really need your help! I don't know what to do about this problem: I just got my hamster today, he's already been here for about 5 or 6 hours. Right now he is scratching his cage trying to get out. I don't know what the problem is. I have to say it is getting annoying and I feel like I don't want him anymore, but if he was calm and nice, I would've loved him a lot. I need HELP! How in the world can I make him calm?? P.S. Food doesn't work. I don't think chew toys work, either.

  1. Does he have a wheel to run on?Hamsters are very energetic and they chew a lot too.Give him a couple days and see if he gets used to his cage.He should be fine.

  2. Your hamster is going through a natural process of settling into his cage.  He is in a brand new environment and needs to get used to it.  He had an established home in the pet store and now all that has changed.  People would not like being taken from their home and put someplace else that is unfamiliar to them without their consent.

Your hamster will probably react in a similar manner when his cage is changed.  They need a few days to settle into their new environment.

Have a little patience.  He will calm down in a few days.

Yes, hamsters p**p all over the place.  You need to change the cage weekly.

  3. don't try anything until 2 days later it is probably scared let it settle down so it will think it is a safe place

if you ntry everything it will probably be scared with people looking and fussing around it.

    i will be scared

    LOL

  4. I have a 2 year old male hamster named Kevin.  When he's not sleeping or running in his wheel he's biting and scratching at the cage like he wants to get out.  But my hamster is the sweetest hamster I have ever had.  He'll lay on me when I take him out of his cage and he'll just sit and eat sunflower seeds on my bed while I watch TV.  He's probably just chewing on the cage because he's not used to it yet.  Once he gets used to his new environment he'll probably stop or decrease the amount of scratching.  And if he doesn't it probably just means that he wants to come out and run around.  Try getting one of those hamster balls and putting him in a room with the door closed and let him run around in it for a while, it'll release some of the energy he has built up.

    I hope this helps!! :D

  5. i have about twenty five hampsters, been alive for years, and quite a few i had the same problem with. i moved them all to the basement so I could sleep at night. Also, I made them excersize (bought a wheel/ball) and they stopped, or after abour 5 days they'll calm down. If you were put into a new home... you would try to get out correct? Well good luck, I hoped this helped a little.

  6. take him out and stroke his back or if you have a exercise ball put him in that.

  7. give him a toilet paper tube he will love to shred it

  8. Hamsters are very curiuous, he might jut be getting use to his new cage, hopefully he will calm down. P.s Hamsters are always trying to escape, no matter how big their cage is! lol!

  9. when i got my hamster she was like that to so just leave her in there or let her run around in a ball if u want to leave her in there just do it for 2 or 3 days she is just scared and not used to the new surroundings

  10. he will settle down by either tomorrow or monday

  11. whatever u do...DON'T TAKE HIM OUT!!!! he has to get settled in his cage first for about 2-3 days.........right now its very scared right now so dont try to get it out of its cage because he will bite you!!!!!! go to myhammie.com and it will give you a schedule on how to make a bond between you and your hamster :D ALSO try to put him in a dark area so he can get used to his surroundings faster

i was like that to when i got my first hamster but im so glad i didnt take her back to the pet store!!! i love her and she loves me now!!! :D

  12. i had about bazillion hamsters

and trust me, they just do that naturally.

even my fourth generation of hamsters did that.

just because they need something to bite down for their teeth or something.

try giving it a piece of wood.

when i had the first generation, my cage was completly metal instead of the yellow painting.

its not that the hamster doesn't like you,

becuase my hamsters loved me and was trained pretty well

like it didn't bite me and never peed or pooed on me.

but that took lots of time.

well good luck with your hamster

and give it lots of lovee (:
