Rajesh Chauhan, former off-spinner for India and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Madhya-Pradesh-c809, has advised pacer TP Sudhindra, who was recently issued a life-ban from cricket by the BCCI on charges of spot-fixing, to opt for a mercy appeal, as opposed to taking the matter to court.
“I don’t know what to tell these youngsters,” he said. “Once they come into the limelight, they indulge in wrongdoing. My advice to Sudhindra would be to go for a mercy appeal rather than fight in court.”
Sudhindra, who is affiliated with Madhya Pradesh and the Deccan Chargers in the Indian Premier League, is one among five players who have recently been issued punishments by the BCCI for their involvement in corrupt activities.
In addition to Sudhindra, Mohnish Mishra, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Abhinav-Bali-c41754 were all named during a sting operation carried out by
India TV during the 2012 edition of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 Premier League, for involvement in corrupt, underhand activities in the league, as well as in the Indian domestic circuit.
The accusations levelled against Sudhindra alleged that he had agreed to bowl a deliberate no-ball during a domestic match, an act for which he had accepted a payment of Rs 5,000.The 28-year-old admitted his crime, but also pointed out that he had also declined
Rs 1 crore (US$ 175,450) which he had been offered during the sting operation, despite his family’s tight financial situation.
The BCCI issued his a life-ban from the sport, and Sudhindra has expressed hesitance in regards to issuing any further statements, claiming that he plans to consult with his lawyers before making a move. However, Chauhan is of the view that the most viable
option for the pacer at the moment is to appeal for mercy.
“The player knows his crime and if he has admitted his guilt, the best option would be to apply for mercy,” he said.
“I met Sudhindra last when he was preparing for the IPL,” he added. “We discussed his domestic performance. Yes, it is harsh when anyone is banned for life, but it is up to the BCCI. They may have valid reasons for it.”
