TPC Potomac welcomes Web.com Tour Neediest Kids Championship
TPC Potomac has hosted only one professional event since 2006 but this will all change when the Web.com tour event, Neediest Kids Championship, takes place this week. After about two years, University of Maryland will host a professional event at the former
TPC Avenel.
“It was nice having it at Maryland, but I think this move helps take the tournament to the next level,” said Web.com Tour President Bill Calfee, a Maryland graduate.
“I think bringing it to a facility like this has a certain cache to it. The perception of the event, I think, is certainly raised”.
The golf course had been put on an over haul for about two years. After spending some hefty amount on it, round about $ 25 million, the golf course looks an absolute marvel.
This partnership with Web.com tour will benefit both the tour and the university. 2010 Seniors championship took place at this course and after about two years, the course struck partnership with Web.com tour.
AT&T National, hosted by Tiger Woods, was being held at Congressional Golf and Country club but with their contract nearing an end, TPC Potomac might bid for the tournament.
If they succeed in hosting the AT&T National, this would be a major achievement, as it will not only boost the game of golf but also University Students will get to see some big names every year.
The Tournament Director Sodeman received hundreds of texts from the students when the venue for the Web.com tour was announced.
The event was initially to take place in June but a move back will be of benefit, as all the players playing will be competing for the PGA Tour cards.
“When we started we had nothing – no sponsors, no volunteers, no anything,” Sodeman said. “We’ve been able to build it. . . . Now we’ve taken a pretty large step up coming over here, and we’re looking forward to continuing to build”.
20-yera-old Patrick Cantlay will also be seen in action along with the former PGA Tour winners, Jason Gore, Woody Austin and Paul Stankowski.
“It’s not just us alone saying we’ll do it,” General Manager Mike Sullivan said of hosting a PGA Tour event.
