  1. yes there has, Jim Turkey

  2. Lots of people have had 1 at bat in the MLB never to play again. Not necessarily because they immediately retired, but because they were sent back to the minors and never to resurface.

  3. Billy Crystal? IDK I guessed LOL

  4. Jim Turkey im pretty sure.

  5. Perhaps not "retired" technically, but never played again? Yes.

Many, many pitchers, but you don't want them. Fair enough.

Remember that an at-bat is not the same as a plate appearance. An AB is credited when a given PA ends with a hit, an out, reaching base by error, or a fielder's choice. Taking a walk, getting hit by the pitch, or catcher's or umpire's interference do not count as at-bats.

Eddie Gaedel walked in his one plate appearance, so he had zero at-bats.

The Play Index identifies 173 non-pitchers who had a career total of one at-bat, dating back to 1871. Most of them, no surprise, you've never heard of, but one does stand out -- HOF manager Walt Alston, who went to plate for the Cardinals one time in 1936 and went down swinging.

Most recently -- and we'll be fair to the 2008 guys, who might yet again pick up the bat -- was Chris Basak with the 2007 Yankees.

Graham was a real player, although the movie didn't bother getting right many of the facts about his very brief career. But, alas (and to add to the dramatic value of both novel and film), he never batted in his one game.

  6. Eddie Gaedel.  He had one at bat for the St. Louis Browns in 1951, walked, and never played again.  He was hired by Bill Veeck as a publicity stunt, as he was only  3 feet 7 inches tall.  He wore number 1/8.

According to Baseball Reference, there are 632 players with one career plate appearance.

  7. billy crystal

  8. Archie "Monnlight" Graham.

Oh wait, that was Field of Dreams...
