TRUE OR FALSE: The famous "shower scene" from "Psycho" was performed by a stand-in?

The famous bloody shower scene from the movie horror classic "Psycho" with Janet Liegh had to be re-shot with an extra in the place of Anthony Perkins {Norman Bates}

because he was nowhere around at the time.....

This in part led to the many different cuts in the scene and why you could not see Norman's face when he was attacking Janet Liegh

Anthony Perkins actually did not participate in the shower scene at all, he was in New York preparing himself for a play

  1. Yep, that's all true. There was somewhere close to 90 different splices. He was rehearsing for the musical "Greenwillow."

    Also, they only showed Janet Leigh's hands, shoulders, and head during the shower scene. The rest of the body was actually a stand-in, as well.

  2. I bow to the infinite wisdom of the guy above.

  3. Another piece of trivia I learned is that chocolate syrup was used to look like blood going down the drain.  Since the movie was in black and white,  the color didn't matter.
